As a result of its isolated geography and on the basis of religion, the peoples of the Himalaya region have created over centuries a unique culture of arts and crafts. In spite of negative influences like mass tourism or the communist ideology, the skill has not disappeared until our days.

In contrast to Western cultures, the arts and crafts are not performed by "creative", individual artists, but by anonymous artisans who have inherited the knowledge and skill from generation to generation and who follow old, religiously motivated, iconographic rules.
