Garuda Bird - from a Temple in Mandaly.

I saw Mandalay in 1980. It was like making a time journey to a British colonial town towards the late nineteenth century. I have read that the city was ravaged after my visit with several fires in the 1980s that destroyed thousands of old houses. With the immigration of Chinese citizens and modern buildings the city is said to have changed considerably since then.

Slideshow Birma Pagan - artelino

Birma - Pagan - MyanmarPagan is unique in this world. A huge jungle area of circa 25 square kilometers filled with deserted temples, pagodas and cloisters. The area once comprised 20,000 buildings of which 5,000 are still in a well preserved state. In 1980 I saw it as a huge untouched area of ruins in the jungle that seemed to be out of this world.
